About Spark of East

Spark of East is a curated discovery site for unexpected, useful — and sometimes simply fascinating — products from Eastern marketplaces.

I filter the noise my own way. One perspective, no algorithm, no committee. If something catches my eye for the right reasons, it ends up here.

How I choose products

Every item on this site passed a simple test: would I stop scrolling for this?

Beyond that, I look for two things:

  • Unexpected — products that solve a problem in a way you wouldn't have thought of, or exist for reasons that are hard to explain in a single sentence.
  • Useful — not useful in a generic sense, but useful in a way that's specific to how people actually live. Small fixes. Quiet improvements. Things that earn their place.

Some products are both. Others don't solve a clear problem at all — they're simply interesting. That counts too.

What I don't do

  • I don't feature products just because they're trending
  • I don't rank by sales volume or popularity
  • I don't pretend to be objective — every pick reflects my own taste and curiosity

Why Asia

Eastern marketplaces — across China, Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and beyond — are producing things that simply don't exist elsewhere. Different problems, different aesthetics, different assumptions about what an object should do or be.

That's what makes browsing them worthwhile. And that's what I'm trying to share here.

A note on affiliate links

Most links on this site are affiliate links. If you buy something through them, I earn a small commission — at no extra cost to you. This is how the site stays running. It doesn't change what gets featured.

Paid placements exist, but they don't override editorial judgment. A product can only appear here — paid or not — if it genuinely fits what this site is about.
